the runs, the shakes and the first sitter

yesterday in the early morning i called the pediatrician to report that max had his first case of diarrhea and i wasn’t really sure what to do about it. i also casually mentioned that alex had been shaking his head the past few days—like he was saying no-no-no-no-no. for max, they recommended alternating his oatmeal with rice cereal. for alex, they wanted to see him right away.

i guess a lot of times when a baby shakes their head it means ear infection. his ears were fine. they are thinking his head shaking could be either the fact that he has newfound use of his neck thanks to the physical therapy and he likes to shake his head. or it could be that the patch of scaly skin on his scalp is itchy and he’s trying to scratch. maybe he just didn’t like the smell of max’s diarrhea?! in any case, nothing to be too worried about—phew! they do want me to make an appointment to have measurements of his head taken. the tort has caused a bit of flattening and they want to make sure it’s not getting worse. if it is, he’ll be fitted for a helmet. let’s hope it doesn’t come to that—but if it does, believe me, alex honey, we will do it up right!

in order to take alex in in the middle of the day like that, i had to do something i’ve never done—leave one of the boys with someone other than tripper for longer than 10 minutes. congratulations, ceecee, on being the boys’ first-ever true babysitter! and thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here for us. i know i was less than a joy to be around yesterday—i’m so sorry! max said he had a wonderful time with you and can’t wait to see you again on thursday.
