the big dig.

Backyarddigsite

all last week it was chilly here in atlanta. chilly as in not even out of the 60s chilly. so why we waited until the temps rose up into the high 80s to start the big dig, i have no idea. what is the big dig you may be asking?

well …

back in january/february-ish, my friend kristi, an interior designer, called to let me know she had gotten an awesome deal on a cute outdoor play cottage and asked if i’d like one for the boys. absolutely!! thank you, kristi!! so the next day she pulled up in her minivan and dropped off a monster box—the boys’ big birthday present—which has been hiding in plain sight since then in the garage. with the boys’ birthday looming, pompa offered to come over and help prep the area where the house will sit, which included ripping out several very large azaleas, removing several million pieces of pinestraw, and digging up quite a bit of dirt. (don’t you hate it when you forget to take the before picture?)

we had planned to make a little patio area for the house to sit on out of those 12″x12″ cement pavers from home depot, since the cottage actually doesn’t have a floor. but once at home depot, lars, the guy in the orange apron, convinced me that these recycled rubber pavers were a much better solution—you can’t, after all, skin your knees on a rubber floor. try it. you can’t. so that little tidbit sealed the deal. i needed 12 of them to cover the 20-square-foot area we, um, pompa had cleared.

Pavers

since they are rubber and flexible, you also do not need to do the whole gravel, stones, sand routine. they simply lay right down on the dirt and snap together with strategically placed clips on the back. nice. even so, pompa wanted to make sure the newly dug up ground was nice and level …

Pompadigging

hi pompa! sitting down on the job i see? kidding! thank you so much for doing this for the boys! tripper and i never would be able to get it done after hours.

next week … house construction. it should be fun. in huge letters on the front of the kit’s directions it says:

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP!

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP!

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP!

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP!

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP!

good times! i’m hoping we have the house completed by june 3rd. that will give me one week to get the “landscaping” done before the boys’ party on the 11th. tick. tock.
